Usage

When meaning "to watch," assistir traditionally requires the preposition "a" (assistir a/ao), but in colloquial Brazilian Portuguese it's increasingly used as a direct transitive verb (assistir o filme). The meaning "to assist/help" is formal and less common; "ajudar" is preferred in everyday speech. "Assistir a" can also mean "to attend" (events, classes).
