Examples

• "Eu prefiro café a chá."

  I prefer coffee to tea.

• "Ela prefere ficar em casa nos finais de semana."

  She prefers to stay home on weekends.

• "Prefiro não falar sobre isso agora."

  I'd rather not talk about that right now.

Usage

Commonly followed by a noun (prefiro X a Y) or an infinitive verb (prefiro fazer). Note that "preferir" is NOT followed by "do que" in standard Brazilian Portuguese-use "a" instead (prefiro café a chá, not *do que chá). The verb is irregular in some conjugations (prefiro, prefere, preferiu).
