presumir
verb
Senses
- 1.
to presume, to assume
to suppose something is true without proof
- 2.
to show off, to boast
to display proudly or vainly, especially possessions or achievements
Examples
"Presumo que ele já tenha saído do trabalho."
I presume he has already left work.
"Ela adora presumir o carro novo para os vizinhos."
She loves to show off her new car to the neighbors.
"Não podemos presumir que todos sabem usar o sistema."
We can't assume that everyone knows how to use the system.
Usage
In the "assume" sense, often followed by "que" + subjunctive or indicative. In the "show off" sense (more common in Brazilian Portuguese), the object is what's being shown off. False friend alert: doesn't mean "to presume" in the legal sense of "presumption of innocence" (use "presumir" only for general assumptions or showing off).
