Forming the conditional

Future stem + imperfect endings.

Take the future stem (usually the infinitive) and add the imperfect endings:

-ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient

parler → je parlerais, nous parlerions.

Irregular future stems carry over: avoir → aur-, être → ser-, aller → ir-, faire → fer-.

Examples

  • "Je voudrais un café, s'il vous plaît."

    I would like a coffee, please.
